Caramel Fudge Bars

February 27, 2015

This dessert is absolutely magnificent! These bars are like brownies, but far more majestic.  They are  the Grand Tetons of all dessert bars!  Not only that, they are quick and easy to make.  The ease and flawlessness of how they come out of the pan make these the perfect dessert to make and take to social events such as parties and church socials. I first asked Kevin to make these so I could share them with my students at the adult learning center.  They were a hit.  So when he signed up to make dessert for a church event, these were at the top of the list to make and take. There were no left-overs, so once again, they were a hit.  There was nothing to tweak in this recipe from Christ Episcopal Church’s cookbook Blessings.  This recipe is brought to you by Kevin’s Crew/Backers.

1 box German chocolate cake mix

1 1/2 sticks margarine, softened

2/3 cup. evaporated milk, divided

1 c. chopped pecans

14 oz. caramels

1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Stir cake mix, margarine, 1/3 c. evaporated milk and nuts until well mixed.  Pat one-half of the mixture into a greased and floured 9×13 in. pan.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 6-8 min.  Melt caramels with 1/3 c. evaporated milk.  Sprinkle chocolate chips on baked mixture, and carefully spread caramel mixture over the chips.  Crumble remaining cake mixture over the top.  Return to oven and bake 20 to 25 minutes.
